Broken Windows, So Far Gone
These pieces are built of two hand printed matsuo kozo paper sheets sewn together by hand. The image content began with a drawing inspired by a photograph of a lone peony flower, which was the only bloom on a plant that had persevered through neglect and light starvation. Additional visual elements include textile patterns developed from photographs of tiled leaves and blooms, enforcing landscape relationships that are somewhat divorced and abstracted of an orderly arrangement. The layering and subtlety of the back panel, lightly visible to the front, evoke a passing of time. Each piece has a cut window to the back panel, a physical piercing of the otherwise intact front paper. The sewing elements suggest a repair, mending, or tie.
